Two men in their 30s were shot inside Ballpark Village in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, prompting a police investigation on Sunday night. One later died, the station says.
The shooting occurred around 8:04 p.m. local time. Ballpark Village is a dining and entertainment district across from the stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals play.
At a news conference on Sunday night, St. Louis City Police Major Mary Warnecke said an argument broke out at the party and the suspect pulled out a gun and began firing shots into the crowd.
“We have private security at venues like this, but when somebody pulls out their weapon, that’s a situation that occurs and its very difficult to prevent,” Major Warnecke said.
Two men in their 30’s were struck by the gunfire, according to authorities. There were hundreds of people in attendance, somewhere between 300 to 400, according to Capt. Renee Kriesmann. It was on the rooftop level of the Budweiser Brew House.
Police said the alleged shooter is still at large.
Police said earlier that two men were shot, one in the head who was listed in unstable condition and a second in the leg. That person was listed in stable condition, authorities said. Both were rushed to local hospitals.
The Cardinals were in Pittsburgh for a game Sunday, but say in a statement they are shocked and saddened. The team is working with police to track down the person.
Police said there were off duty officers and private security officers at the event.
One witness said that he heard firework sounds.
A KMOV-TV reporter at the scene posted a picture showing the venue apparently empty.
The same reporter from KMOV-TV noticed a sign on the front of the establishment that read firearms are not permitted at Ballpark Village.
