A bus conveying FC Ifeanyi Ubah team officials and players to Ijebu Ode was involved in a road accident today. Two players became unconscious following the accident while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The team had been on their way to honour the NPFL Matchday 36 fixture with Sunshine Stars billed for this Sunday, 3rd of September, 2017, when the bus got involved in a head-on collision with a passenger bus along Ijebu-Ode road just before noon.
A statement signed by the clubs Chairman, Mr. Chukwuma Ubah confirmed the incident.
The statement read: “We wish to confirm that FC Ifeanyi Ubah team bus conveying players and officials was involved in a car accident along Benin/Ore expressway while on our way to Ijebu Ode to honour the NPFL Matchday 36 fixture with Sunshine Stars billed for this Sunday, 3rd of September, 2017. Six of our players sustained varying degree of injuries and two that are unconscious hitherto have regained consciousness and are receiving treatment presently at the closest medical facility near the site of the accident. We wish to express our felicitations for your concern, support, outpour of emotions, deepest thoughts and prayers at this sad times.”
Two of the major candidates in the Anambra State governorship election, Dr. Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Mr. Oseloka Obaze of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) commiserated with the players, officials and proprietor of the club over the accident.
Both men in separate statements wished the players and officials quick recovery.
Dr. Nwoye in his statement said: “The news of the accident involving the bus conveying players and officials of FC Ifeanyi Ubah is a shock to me. The accident is an unfortunate development not just for the football team and their supporters but for everyone of us from Anambra.
“Dr. Ubah has through his resources brought great pride to us through the successes of FC Ifeanyi Ubah and an accident like this is a collective injury on everyone of us.
“It is my prayer that everyone of those injured or in any way affected will receive the fastest recovery from their injuries and it is my prayer that God would sooth the minds of everyone affected.”
Mr. Obaze in his own statement said: “I have just been informed that the team bus conveying officials and players of FC IfeanyiUbah to Ijebu Ode to honour the NPFL Matchday 36 fixture with Sunshine Stars got involved in a ghastly auto crash.
“Although saddened that six players got injured in the crash, I am indeed grateful to God that we did not lose any Warrior. I have since spoken to Dr Ifeanyi Ubah to convey my best wishes and prayers to the management, officials, players, fans of FC IfeanyiUbah and the entire football community.
“I will continue to pray for the quick recuperation of our wounded Warriors. I urge Anambra Warriors, to translate this unfortunate incident to a clarion call to victories and finish the season in high spirits.”
