Mexican drug lord, El Chapo’s son among gang members abducted by gunmen in Mexico

At least 10 members of a Mexican criminal gang have been abducted by unknown gunmen at a restaurant in a Pacific Coast resort, officials say.

The incident took place in the early hours of Monday in Puerto Vallarta in the western state of Jalisco.

Police are trying to locate four women who were part of the group but were not abducted.

Local officials say the victims had travelled from neighbouring states for a celebration.

“There are clear indications that the 10 or 12 men abducted were members of a criminal organisation,” said Jalisco state Attorney-General Eduardo Almaguer.

One of them had worked as bodyguard for the former governor of Jalisco state, Emilio Gonzalez Marquez, he added.

Another was one of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman’s sons, the state attorney general said on Tuesday.

The captives were taken at gunpoint by five men who had arrived at La Leche restaurant in two utility vehicles.

Security guards apparently ran away as they saw the gunmen approaching the restaurant, El Informador newspaper reported.

Five luxury vehicles believed to have belonged to the victims were seized by police.

The cars had number plates from the states of Sinaloa, Nayarit and Jalisco.

Puerto Vallarta, in the state of Jalisco, is one of Mexico’s top vacation destinations, attracting all-inclusive tourists and high-end sun seekers to its beaches.

Guzman was the head of the Sinaloa cartel and one of the world’s most wanted drug kingpins until he was captured in January. Six months earlier, he had broken out of a high-security penitentiary in central Mexico through a mile-long tunnel.

Jalisco, which lies south along the Pacific coast from Sinaloa, is home to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, which has become one of the country’s most powerful drug gangs in recent years.

Jalisco Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer told a news conference that one of Guzman’s sons, Alfredo was among six people abducted by armed men from an upscale eatery in the heart of the Pacific resort town early on Monday.

“The person is the son of Joaquin Guzman Loera, and has been identified through inspections of vehicles and by security agencies, as well as through expert opinions,” Almaguer said.

At the news conference, Almaguer identified four others who had been kidnapped, but said law enforcement had no leads as to their whereabouts.

In 2008, another of Guzman’s sons, Edgar, was murdered in a Sinaloan shopping mall by hitmen hired by the Beltran Leyva drug cartel, sparking a war with the Sinaloa Cartel.
